How Food Chains Start
All the food chains start with a producer, which is usually a plant. The first consumer, usually a insect or a small animal, comes and eats the plants. If there is a second consumer, then they would eat the first consumer. This process continues on until the last consumer dies. When the last consumer dies, a decomposer comes and eats the remains of the last consumer.
The Roles of Consumers, Producers, and Decomposers
Producer- The role of a producer is to take energy from the sun and pass it on to other organisms.
Consumer 1- To eat the producer and take 10% of its energy.
Consumer 2- To eat Consumer 1 and take 10% of its energy.
Consumer 3- To eat Consumer 2 and take 10% of its energy
Decomposer- To get rid of the rest of the dead animal or plant.
What the Arrows in the Food Chain mean and their Impotence
The arrows in the food chain are used to indicate the direction in which the organism's energy is going when eaten.
